The goal of cupping and guasha treatments are to improve blood flow. What we acupuncturists call "qi and blood stagnation," means inflammation is present--this could present with pain syndromes or diseases. In order to move the blood, lymph, and detox the body, we utilize suction cups or guasha tools. We will asses the method of cupping and type of cups used in your session. We may use static, moving, or a combination of both during a cupping session. Types of cups that may be used during a treatment are silicone cups, glass cups, plastic, or ceramic cups. Glass and ceramic cups are often combined with warming therapy--this is called fire cupping. Every cupping treatment is individualized to your needs. After cups are removed, there will be light red to dark red/purple marks depending on the level of stagnation.
Guasha has the same effects as cupping, but instead of a stationary/sliding technique, this is a "scraping" technique. Gua means to scrape and sha refers to the reddened marks that may appear from guahsa. The sha can tell us that there was blood stagnation or heat trapped in the body.
Do not be alarmed to marks that appear after cupping and guasha, they should dissipate anywhere from three days to a week, depending on the color of the marks after treatment. The marks even help us to evaluate and diagnose to better get a treatment plan in place.
